The Name Game: To Do or Not to Do
By Patricia Lee

Choosing to take your new husband's last name can be a big decision. You might have taken your surname for granted before, but somehow, Smith seems a bit more appealing than Snitzerdoodle.

Your surname is the name you went to school and work with, made friends with, signed under in the hotel at your first trip to Myrtle Beach, got your first credit card bill with, and what everyone knows you by. You might not want to let go. But then again, your last name might be resonant with Mississippi or sound as if spoken in a foreign tongue, so you might want to make that bold move to have it changed.

If it's easy for you to take your husband's name, then congratulations to you. That's one less thing for you to worry about. In the past, most women had to take their husband's name. Now, a woman can keep her name or even create a combination of both. Just decide what is best for you and your future family, and don't worry about what everyone will think. Some people might thing Smith-Snitzerdoodle is cool.
