What's a Parent To Do?
By Patricia Lee

When you get married to someone, not only will they be forever a part of your life, but so will their family. Hopefully, they will like your soon-to-be spouse and will get along well. And what is a better place to show their support and happiness than in helping to plan the wedding!

The parents of the bride and groom need to play an active role in the planning of the wedding. There are certain responsibilities that each set of parents need to take. Though they are separate, they should also be able to work together as a team.

Here is a list of some of the things they should do:

Bride's Parents

  • serve as official host of the wedding on the wedding day (unless the bride and groom host themselves)
  • if hosting, pick up the total tab
  • mother purchases attire early so she can notify groom's mother (they can choose a similar color and style)
  • mother helps daughter with planning (reception, invitations, etc.)
  • mother helps pick out a wedding dress
  • father walks daughter down the aisle
  • father gives small speech at the altar
  • father dances with daughter at the reception
  • both offers encouragement and support

Groom's Parents

  • mother calls bride's mom to arrange for a meeting between the couple and parents (to plan the wedding budget and make guest lists)
  • helps son choose a tuxedo
  • host rehearsal dinner

Having your parents help you with your wedding can be a wonderful thing. It should not be the nagging and scolding they did to you as a child. You can rest assured they will too excited for your marriage to treat you like a child. They know this is a big decision for you, and will do anything to help. But if they do want to give you a hug, it's okay to do it. You can show your adolescent side for one last time.
