Long before the days of levening and sugar, good old-fashioned fruitcake served
as wedding cakes. Then came the traditional white tiered cakes. Well, today's
cakes are more than just all-white and tiered. They are artistic creations with
flowers, fruit, lights, fountains and a touch of the couple's style and personality.
Cake flavors
The wedding cakes of today also come in a variety of flavors and filling such
as a chocolate cake with raspberry filling, or Apricot Brandy. You could even
mix different flavors on different layers to please any guest's tastebud.
Toppers
Toppers can reflect:
- a story of how you met or how you were engaged (starfish & seashells if
you met at the beach, Disney characters if that's where you got engaged),
- your hobbies and interests (scuba divers, skiers, parachuters, pets, musical
instruments),
- your careers (fireman, policeman, lawyer, veterinarian),
- the theme of your wedding (mini Christmas tree, tropical flowers, 4th of July
sparklers)
Groom's Cake
At the turn of the century, the groom's cake was similar to a fruitcake and
given to the guests in small white boxes as they left the reception. As legend
would have it, single female guests would place the box under their pillow and
supposedly, the man they dreamed of would be their husband. The latter tradition
is long gone and forgotten, but groom cakes are often served today as prepacked
slices for guests to take home as favors so not all of the originial tradition
has died. Groom cakes of today are meant to be fun and creative. They come in
all kinds of shapes, sizes, flavors and themes from sports to cars to the groom's
hobbies.
