 Out of state minister
Author: rkhoenle

I want to have a minister who lives outside of the state of Michigan perform the ceremony in Michigan.

Can he do the vows or do we need to have someone from the State of Michigan?

The laws vary from one state to another. In our state, if a minister has been licensed by his denomination, he can perform a wedding without having to be licensed by the state. Check with the Secretary of State's office in Lansing. They can tell you what your state requires. If he can't perform the actual marriage vows (the legal part), he may still be able to do all other parts of the ceremony and have a second minister, who is licensed in Michigan, do the actual vows.

I am a bridal consultant in MN and I had this situation come up once. The out of state minister was not able to sign the marriage licence for the state of MN so we had to have a judge come in a perform the "real" ceremony after they went through the motions with their out of state minister. It would be well worth your while to check with the state so this doesn't happen to you. Check with the marriage licensing bureau of your county.
The best to you!

I'm a minister in South Carolina. The information I have for an officiant in the State of Michigan is the following:

Minister of the gospel who is pastor of church or continues to preach, or NONRESIDENT MINISTER of gospel authorized to perform ceremony in own state.

Double check with the county clerk, but that should be pretty current. Hope it helps.

We live in New Jersey, but would like our friend who is a minister from New York, perform our wedding in New Jersey. Can he perform our ceremony, are there any rules or forms he would need to fill out?

Call the county office where you will obtain your marriage license and ask what the requirements are in NJ. If he needs to be licensed in the state, the county can tell you where to obtain the forms. In some states, a minister can be licensed to perform only one wedding on a specific date. Other states allow permanent licensing and some don't require local licensing.
